The following services are available to UCSB faculty who would like assistance with project development and funding.

Finding funding sources

  • fund searches
    • ISBER will provide an individual, customized fund search for any faculty member. This can usually be done within 1-2 weeks.  In order to request a fund search please send the following information to Paula Ryan: 
      • your name and department
      • BRIEF (1 paragraph max.) description of the proposed project
      • any keywords you would suggest for search parameters
      • amount of money you think you need (rough estimate)
  • direct access to funding source databases

Project development and proposal writing

  • workshops
  • individual consultation and assistance
    • Dr. Barbara Walker, Director of Research Development for the Social Sciences, provides detailed consultation and assistance on all aspects of faculty research proposal design and writing (research design, constructing an argument, conceptual issues, formatting, etc.).
  • budget development
    • Paula Ryan, ISBER Proposal Coordinator, is responsible for budget preparation on all grants submitted through ISBER and should be consulted early on in project development.
  • copies of successful proposals
    • We can sometimes provide copies of successful proposals for your review.  Contact Barbara Walker at ext. 3576.

Proposal submission

  • Deadlines:  
    • extramural proposals are submitted on behalf of the UC Regents, and therefore all proposals are subject to review by Office of Research prior to submission. Please discuss your intent to submit early on in the process with ISBER staff.
  • Document preparation:
    • ISBER staff will assist in the preparation of budget documents (forms and spreadsheets), cover pages, all required certifications.
  • Photocopying:
    • ISBER will provide all necessary copies of the proposal (for the funding agency, subcontractors, investigators and other units on campus.
  • Submission:
    • ISBER staff will submit proposals, either electronically (e.g., NSF's FastLane system) or by designated carrier, in time to reach the funding agency on time.
  • Human subjects:
    • ISBER staff will advise you how to submit required human subjects research forms to the Office of Research. On projects involving human subjects, no funds may be drawn on the award until the plans for meeting human subjects’ needs have been approved by the campus Human Subjects Committee.  To access the research website click here : http://www.research.ucsb.edu/compliance/index2.shtml
  • Administering your award:
    • Once your grant is awarded, ISBER will administer your funds, provide monthly statements of award balances and expenditures, process personnel, purchasing, and travel paperwork
